POSITION SUMMARY:

The Dean of Students supports Mapleton Jr/Sr High School students in grades 6–12 through a focus on attendance, behavior, and academic success. Guided by the Mapleton Portrait of a Graduate, this position helps cultivate students as dynamic communicators, thinkers, innovators, and advocates, anchored by personal health and wellness. The Dean works closely with students, families, and staff to promote belonging, resilience, and responsibility—ensuring that all students have the opportunity to thrive academically and personally as they prepare to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Dean of Students serves as a student support and engagement leader for Mapleton Jr/Sr High School (grades 6–12). This position focuses on creating a positive, inclusive, and trauma-informed school culture that reflects Mapleton’s vision: to provide a supportive and safe learning environment where all students are encouraged and empowered to reach their educational and personal potential.

The Dean of Students plays a central role in helping students develop the attributes defined in the Portrait of a Graduate, ensuring that every learner experiences growth as a communicator, thinker, innovator, and advocate—anchored by the habits of wellness that sustain lifelong learning and leadership.

This position also partners with the district’s Food Systems Coordinator to connect the school’s garden, cafeteria, and classroom—linking nutrition, food production, and learning through the district’s farm-to-table vision.

DUTIES WILL BE PERFORMED CONSISTENTLY AND ACCURATELY AND INCLUDE, BUT MAY NOT BE LIMITED TO:

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students to promote belonging, motivation, and accountability.

  • Support student development as dynamic communicators by facilitating restorative conversations, peer mediation, and opportunities for students to express their needs and ideas constructively.

  • Foster curiosity, perseverance, and problem-solving as dynamic thinkers through mentoring, reflective goal-setting, and consistent academic support.

  • Encourage creativity, initiative, and leadership as dynamic innovators, helping students take ownership of projects, service learning, and school improvement efforts.

  • Cultivate empathy, resilience, and social responsibility as dynamic advocates, guiding students to use their voice to support others and their community.

  • Monitor attendance and coordinate proactive interventions to improve engagement and success.

  • Implement trauma-informed, restorative, and culturally responsive practices that support students’ behavioral, emotional, and academic needs.

  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and the Student Success Team to align interventions within Mapleton’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).

  • Coordinate behavior and student success plans, and communication with families and community agencies.

  • Maintain accurate attendance, referral, and intervention records; prepare reports as needed.

  • Support supervision of campus spaces and extracurricular events to promote a safe and welcoming environment.

  • Partner with the Family Resource Center, Community Health Workers, and local partners to coordinate wraparound supports.

  • Collaborate with the Food Systems Coordinator to engage students in garden, nutrition, and farm-to-table learning experiences.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Secondary Principal.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Ability to connect with and support middle and high school students, including those with trauma histories or disabilities.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and conflict-resolution skills.

  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice.

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and restorative approaches.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records, manage time effectively, and adapt to student and school needs.

  • Basic computer literacy required; ability to use student information systems preferred.

  • Experience in education, counseling, or youth development preferred.

EDUCATIONAL/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Oregon Teaching Certificate required and it is the responsibility of the candidate to maintain their licensure. A Master's Degree in Education or Counseling is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to stand and move about campus for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds periodically.

  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors (including garden and activity areas).

  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in person and electronically.
